How to Buy Natural Jadeite: What a GIA Certificate Tells You

Fine jadeite is one of the most prized gemstones in Asia, especially in Singapore, Hong Kong and China. Prices for top stones can rival diamonds, so knowing what you're buying matters.

Type A, B and C jadeite

  • Type A: natural jadeite, untreated except for a surface wax. This is what collectors want.
  • Type B: bleached with acid and filled with polymer to look cleaner. It can weaken over time.
  • Type C: dyed to improve its color.

What a GIA report tells you

A GIA report confirms whether the stone is jadeite and whether there are signs of polymer filling or dye. For a natural, untreated stone, look for wording showing no indications of impregnation or dye. That's the Type A you want.

What makes jadeite valuable

  • Color: an even, intense green ("imperial green") is the most valued.
  • Translucency: light should glow through the stone.
  • Texture: fine and smooth, with no visible graininess.
